Legend: Richard Joyce from Claddagh, Co. Galway was captured by Moor pirates and enslaved in the 16th century. In captivity he shaped a unique ring for the woman he loved. On his release he presented her with the ring and from then on the Claddagh ring became the great traditional wedding band, Today it is commonly accepted that the joining hands, heart, and crown represent the bond of friendship, love and loyalty.
